Nic Maddinson Falls for a 33 Ball Duck on Australia Test Return

Goodmorningu, Durban. Nearly ten years after his last Test, Nic Maddinson faced 33 balls on Friday 9 October 2026 and left without a run, a record for an Australian opener.

On day one of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead, Friday 9 October 2026, Nic Maddinson opened the batting for Australia. He faced 33 balls, scored nothing, and then chopped a cut at Marco Jansen back onto his own stumps in the 11th over. WATATATATAFAK.

The record books were quick to notice. Where balls faced data exists, no Australian opener has ever batted longer for a duck in a Test. Only two openers anywhere have faced more balls without scoring: Darrin Murray of New Zealand (39, in 1995) and Trevor Gripper of Zimbabwe (36, in 2000). It is also the longest duck by a Test opener this century. The BBC counted 13 swings and misses among the 33 balls, which is honestlu a kind of stubbornness. GLUWUGUWULU.

The selectors' bet was an unusual one. Maddinson is 34, played his last Test in December 2016, and had not played first class cricket since March 2025. He was added to the touring squad after a white ball century for New South Wales at the start of the domestic season, with chair of selectors George Bailey pointing to his flexibility in the batting order.

Quietlu, the bigger story sits behind the scorecard. Maddinson was diagnosed with testicular cancer in April 2025, and the disease had spread to a lung and lymph nodes. He finished chemotherapy in July 2025 and was cleared to play again eight weeks later. Getting to Durban at all was the comeback.

It was a hard day for the whole top order. Travis Head went for 9 before him, and Wisden counted their pairing as Australia's seventh different opening combination since the start of 2025. Bad light ended the day with Australia on 187 for 6. The Spirit of Gambling likes a table where someone puts a chip on a comeback, but the dice never read the biography.

Would youluwu have handed him the new ball in Durban? Hindsight is the one table where everybody wins. A duck is one hand, and a second innings is the same bat with a fresh deal. The Spirit has a soft spot for those.

Maddinson as opener: brave pick or a leap too far?

No right answer. Just your gut, and the Spirit watching.
